Does Your Dream Job Really Work?

Logistics to Consider when Identifying Your Perfect Profession

Sep 29, 2007 Christine Scivicque

Yes, your dream job is out there. Maybe you even have an idea of what it is. Now, take some time to identify if it reasonably makes sense for you.

Developing your personal idea of a “dream job” can be a very helpful tool in visualizing your future professional goals. Identifying what you see as the perfect career can help you establish a step-by-step path to reaching those goals. In Defining Your Dream Job, broad concepts were presented as a way of helping you begin to recognize what is important to you in a career choice. Now, logistical questions will help you determine if the ideal career you are considering reasonably makes sense for you. Consider the following:

What education do you need? Are you willing / able to obtain it?

When selecting a career, consider the level of knowledge you will need to get hired for the desired position. Is a higher degree of education of required? Will experience in the field (or even another field) outweigh a lack of formal education? Will a willingness to learn and an enthusiastic attitude offset lack of education? If more schooling is needed, consider your willingness and ability to obtain it. Think about the time and money this will require and determine if you are ready to make such a commitment. Will the resulting career justify it? Consider potential income, satisfaction and long term opportunity.

Where do you want to live? Is your ideal job available there?

Location is a critical factor in determining if your “dream career” is logistically sound. If you live in Hawaii and you dream of being a snow skier, you may find it difficult. Likewise, a stock broker in Kansas City who dreams of working on Wall Street knows he must move to New York in order to fulfill his dream. Of course, many careers are available throughout the world. You must research the community where you live (or want to live) to see if your ideal job is available. If not, can you make it so? Perhaps there is an opportunity to create something new. Otherwise, you will need to re-evaluate either the job or the location.

What are the long term opportunities for your ideal career?

It’s important to look at a career as a long term endeavor. Remember that, as they grow, most people want to continue to be challenged. A stagnant career can be very de-motivating. Choose a job that has growth potential. It’s very empowering to know that opportunity surrounds you. Most people are motivated by the idea of promotion (and more money). When considering your “dream job”, try to picture yourself in twenty years. Will you still be doing the same job or will you have moved onward and upward? Make sure the career you choose allows for a satisfying, challenging future full of opportunity.
